Hello everyone, my new name is now Aneko and it means “older sister” in Japanese. I was found as a stray back in March of 2016 and I have been living at Animal Control ever since then. I’m a tiny girl at just 14lbs. The shelter estimated my age to be between 6 and 10 years old but DC SIR thinks I am closer to 14 – 16 yrs old. I have been very scared and depressed living in a shelter. No one could get near me because I would snap and howl. When DC SIR saw that I was put up for adoption, many people contacted them to pull me. I hadn’t been medically assessed in the 3 months because I wouldn’t let anyone touch me but the shelter thought I was deteriorating. The only way they could give me my rabies shot was to sedate me. They saw that I have a mammary mass and they don’t believe I have been spayed.

The vet also noted that I may be nearly blind and deaf. Since I was abandoned and living on the streets, I don’t trust people so I let them know to stay away. Unfortunately, when DC SIR picked me up I was put directly into a crate by the shelter and my disposition hasn’t changed since arriving at Shiba HQ. When the volunteer opened the crate and tried to put my harness on I got very scared and snapped at her. I wouldn’t let anyone touch me at all. I was walking around with a harness half on and wouldn’t let anyone near me to take it off. After about 3 hours of gaining my trust with yummy boiled chicken, the volunteer was able to cut off my harness. But I was still scared. I screamed and howled all night and my foster stayed up with me and spoke softly to me to calm me down. DC SIR thinks I am one of their most challenging rescues. Hopefully, they can find a facility to vet me as they will need to sedate me. Aneko is in need of extensive medical and behavioral care. We expect her to be in rescue for quite some time. Please consider donating to her fund so that we can provide her with the essential care she needs in her senior years.  Email adoption@dcsir.org  and tell them that you’d like to adopt Aneko!

Aneko will need behavioral and medical assessment that will likely take more than two weeks. Please consider making a donation to her care here.
