Hello everyone, my name is now Mizuki, and it means, ‘beautiful’ in Japanese, but you can call me Zuki if you like. I am a tiny 6-year-old, female, Shiba Inu. I lived with one family and was well cared for but I developed severe allergies that left me bald with irritated, dry, flaky and infected skin. My family kept taking me to the vet and they would put me on antibiotics, steroids, and eventually Apoquel, but nothing worked for long. My body aches so much that I was often muzzled for bathing and nail trims. Recently my family had a baby and couldn’t continue working on my issues or afford the vet bills that never helped me heal. So my family took me to a shelter but the shelter could not take me. Luckily, the shelter had worked with DC SIR and knew of their ‘Allergy Program’ so they took my family’s information and contacted DC SIR. Immediately, DC SIR said, “Yes! We will help her!” This is where my life is supposed to change.

They have worked with hundreds of dogs like me over the years. They are going to take me off all the drugs and fix my insides! DC SIR had a nice volunteer drive over 6 hours to pick me up and take me to Shiba HQ. I was nervous and snapped a couple times. When I got to Shiba HQ I got to explore the yard and got some yummy boiled chicken; I was taken to a bathroom for my shower. The volunteer spent a long time with me before she handled me. She gave me treats every time I came near her. In just a short time she had ALL my very long nails trimmed and had me fully bathed! I didn’t need a muzzle at all! I did show her how strong my voice is an gave her a big ole Shiba scream at the end of my shower! I showed her, ha! I got my own room to relax and rest, and I got some supplements and homemade bone broth. I even got to meet some of the other dogs but didn’t want them in my face too long. DC SIR hopes to raise the funds for my medical soon. Please share and follow my journey so that others know there is help for dogs like me.

If you are not familiar with DC SIR’s Allergy Program (AD dogs) please see our playlist that features just a few of our dozens of success stories over the years. What is unique about our program? We have had 100% success rate in treating all AD dogs without ever using antibiotics, steroids, serums, and other allopathic drugs that merely hide the symptoms and exasperate the underlying issues (intestinal dysbiosis).

FOSTER UPDATE: She has severe atopic dermatitis. We absolutely love this little girl. She is clean and enjoying a soft bed covered in organic cotton blankets. We wouldn’t be able to take in these long-term, special needs dogs if it wasn’t for the amazing fans that jump into action so that we can continue to pull dogs like Zuki!

Often people see dogs in this condition and immediately blame the owner for neglect. While this can be the case, it is often not, as with Mizuki. It is a systematic failure of a veterinary industry that over-drugs, treat symptoms, and maintains a cycle of sickness for our companion animals. This girl has had the ‘best drugs,’ but despite Apoquel, steroids, antibiotics and the traditional bombardment of immunocompromising approach, she remains sick, bald, infected and itchy. Her family could no longer afford the time and funds along with small children and the arrival of a new baby. We are exceptionally thankful that the shelter she was taken to directed the family to our organization.
