Hello everyone, my new name is now Kabocha and it means “Pumpkin” in Japanese. DC SIR was told that there was a Shiba Inu in a shelter that needed rescue. When they picked me up, they saw I was probably a Jindo/Shiba mix. I was found as a stray and was going to be put to sleep if someone didn’t rescue me. When the DC SIR volunteer came to pick me up, she saw how very skinny I was. I was very nervous and shook with fear when the volunteer picked me up and put me in the car. Soon I began to relax. When I got to the second transport I was given a lot of yummy boiled chicken. It was delicious but I got a little car sick.

When I got to Shiba HQ I drank a lot of water and went straight to the shower. The volunteer thought I didn’t smell so well. I was dirty from my time as a stray. The volunteer felt every rib in my body protruding from ribcage. I was very good in the shower and didn’t protest at all. After I was clean and dried off, I was very happy! I started to shake my tail and prance around! It felt good to be clean. Right away, I went outside and met all the dogs at Shiba HQ. I got along with everyone! They all let me sniff them! I really liked being around the other large dog, Renji. I tried to play with him a few times but I tripped over the little dogs a couple times. My favorite thing, next to meeting all the friendly dogs, was getting to sniff and explore the backyard! I am not neutered, so DC SIR needs to have me medically cared for before I am available for adoption. But they think I am going to be a very popular pup because of my sweet disposition. I need to gain some weight and complete my medical updates but I should be available for adoption soon after all of that. My foster mom came by Shiba HQ to take me to my new home. I will be living with another male Shiba Inu, who is also a DC SIR alum. They will give you more information on me as they get to know me. Please share my story to help me find a forever home!

Update: Kabocha is a Shiba/Jindo mix, and is a gentle giant that loves everyone he meets! He came to DC SIR from a shelter, where found himself after being picked up as a stray. He was dirty and very underweight, but he has thrived in rescue! Kabocha has been neutered, microchipped, updated on core vaccinations, and is heartworm negative. He still needs to gain some weight.

Kabocha is very happy-go-lucky and intelligent. He learned “sit” by his third day with his foster family! Kabocha is also handsome, and knows it. In fact, his fosters tell us he’s a little bit vain! If he catches sight of himself in a mirror, and he’ll happily stare at himself and wag his tail.

Kabocha is a chill dog that will lay around on the couch until you come home. He enjoys cuddling with people and being part of a family. He gets along with most dogs, but will require a meet-and-greet in order to be considered for a multi-dog home. He prefers gentle females who are as laid back as he is. He can guard his food from other dogs, but does not exhibit guarding with humans. Kabocha also walks well on a leash!
