Hello everyone, my name new name is Narumi and it means the “roaring of the sea” in Japanese. I am a 3.5 year-old-female Shiba Inu. DC SIR has my AKC papers but I was bought from a backyard breeder. I have only ever had one home and I lived with 2 other dogs. I got along with them most of the time, but I would guard toys and things from them. My owners thought it would be best if I was surrendered to a breed-specific rescue. I had taken several training classes when I was young so I know basic commands. I am very shy and timid, and it will take me time to get used to strangers. When the DC SIR volunteer picked me up, I just cowered in the back of the car. She brought me to Shiba HQ where I got to explore the yard on my own. I was very nervous and kept my tail down as I sniffed around. Soon I got to meet some friendly neutral dogs. I did really well with them so I got to meet all the dogs at Shiba HQ. I growled a couple times but I was given space so everything was fine. I even sniffed the other dogs and followed them into the house once. I let the volunteer carry me inside before the rain started and I hid under the kitchen table. When everyone settled down, I came out to explore the rooms. I eventually found an open spot on a couch and I curled up to rest. A couple other Shibas joined me and that was ok too. The volunteer said I could sleep on the couch, which I did. At first, I wouldn’t touch any treats then the volunteer gave me boiled chicken and I nosed it away. When she gave me smaller pieces and looked away I started to eat them. It was so yummy I finished the entire bowl! This morning my foster mom came to pick me up. I’m too nervous to take treats now but I did lean into her for pets and neck massages. DC SIR will let you know more about me in the coming weeks.
