Sunrise at Braddock Glen and DC Shiba Inu Rescue Partner on Adoption of Senior Rescue Dog

July 15, 2013

Fairfax, Va. – Sunrise Senior Living (“Sunrise”), the premier provider of senior living services, and DC Shiba Inu Rescue (“DCSIR”), the only dog rescue in the metropolitan Washington DC area specializing in Shiba Inus, are pleased to announce that Sunrise at Braddock Glen and DCSIR have completed the adoption of Kuma, a senior Shiba Inu. The smallest of the Japanese native dog breeds, the Shiba Inu is alert and agile with keen senses, and is also an excellent watchdog and companion. Kuma was rescued from a local shelter by DCSIR, and Sunrise at Braddock Glen was chosen from a number of worthy applicants by DCSIR as Kuma’s adoptive home. DCSIR representatives stated, “DCSIR is committed to finding the best environment for each individual dog. While we had excellent applicants for our senior heartthrob, Kuma, we had to find the absolute best situation for his particular temperament and needs. It truly is amazing that this dog, who was so callously discarded, is now loved and cared for by so many people.”

Studies have shown that seniors with dogs have, on average, less doctor visits and exhibit lower levels of blood pressure and cholesterol when compared to non-pet owners. The companionship that pets provide can motivate seniors to become more involved in daily activities and in socializing. Senior dog owners enjoy improved physical activity, spending more time outdoors and walking about twice as often as non-owners. Older dog owners also experience less stress and loneliness, better nutrition, and a stronger focus on the present. “The residents of Sunrise at Braddock Glen are thrilled to have Kuma join our family. He is a breath of fresh air, has already introduced himself to many of us and made himself comfortable in his new home,” said Antionette Doublin, executive director at Sunrise of Braddock Glen.

Each year, approximately 3-4 million dogs and cats are euthanized in our nation’s shelters. DCSIR is committed to saving the lives of and rehoming as many Shiba Inus as possible in the metropolitan DC area. In adopting a senior rescue dog, Sunrise at Braddock Glen has shown its steadfast commitment to both its residents and to the community. The DCSIR Board stated, “Sunrise at Braddock Glen has proven itself to be a loving, caring community, and we are thrilled that Sunrise at Braddock Glen has opened its heart and its doors to a senior dog, who undoubtedly would have been euthanized in a shelter. We can only hope that other assisted-living and senior care facilities follow its example and consider adopting a rescue dog to enhance their communities and enrich the lives of their residents.”
