Hi everyone, my name is Rumi 留美, which means “detain, beauty” in Japanese. I am a five-and-a-half-month-old female Shiba Inu. I am a petite cream Shiba, weighing only 12.3 pounds. I came to DC SIR with my brother, who is 17 days older than me. Our mom loved us very much, but due to difficult life circumstances, she was unable to keep us. Fortunately, she reached out to DC SIR on the same morning their Intake Director happened to be driving from North Carolina to Virginia. Several dedicated volunteers quickly organized a long transport to bring us to Shiba HQ. I did very well on the car ride with three sets of volunteers. When we finally arrived at Shiba HQ late at night, my foster mom took us to the backyard, where my brother and I had the chance to sniff around and explore. Soon after, we met most of the other dogs at Shiba HQ. That night, our foster mom set up a large x-pen area for us to sleep in. The next morning, we had even more time to explore and interact with the other animals. We quickly realized that our foster family is gentle and follows a 100 percent reward-based training approach, which helped us trust her right away. Even though I am half the size of my brother, my big personality allows me to take his toys whenever I want. I am very smart and learned how to use the dog door right away, giving me the freedom to go in and out as I please. I am also quite independent and love playing with squeaky toys. I am adjusting to my new routine, meeting new furry friends, and enjoying plenty of positive reinforcement training. My foster family describes me as fearless and full of playful energy, always ready for my next adventure.
