Hello everyone, my new name is now Akio and it means “bright man” in Japanese! I’m an 11-month-old male Shiba Inu. I was purchased from a popular pet store in Virginia. That means I was born to parents in a puppy mill. My family took very good care of me but I didn’t get the appropriate training for a hyper puppy like myself. I’m very excitable so I jumped and play-nipped the children in my home too much. Thankfully, my family wanted to ensure I went to a good place that would give me the appropriate training. They made sure all my vetting was up to date so that I could come into rescue very quickly. When I went to my Intake Assessment with DC SIR, I did great on the dog-dog assessment and body handling assessment. The DC SIR volunteers said I’d be a very easy puppy to place!

I am fully vetted as required by DC SIR health program, so I will only need a 2-week behavior assessment with a medical monitor. There weren’t any major behavior issues noted in my surrender form but DC SIR will let you know more about me during my stay in rescue. I already got to meet all the dogs at Shiba HQ. I saw DC SIR’s neutral dog, Katniss, first. We had met before at my assessment so I was very excited to see her again. I like all the ladies I met at Shiba HQ but I did growl and snap at the males. They are older than me and were having none of my craziness so I calmed down. I like to get in other dogs’ faces to show them how excited I am to meet them, but those are some basic manners I’ll be learning at DC SIR. I also need to learn not to jump on people and how to loose leash walk but I’m smart, enthusiastic and really like boiled chicken so DC SIR thinks I’m going to be a quick learner. Please follow my story to learn more about me!
