Hello everyone, my name is Buddy and I was adopted out by DC SIR when I was just a year old. I am now 4.5 years old and at no fault of my own, I am back with DC SIR. I am so thankful to have a wonderful place to come back to! When I first came to DC SIR I had severe fear issues and DC SIR had to work with me for almost half a year until I could function enough to do basic things like potty outside during the day and go for walks. DC SIR even chose to have a vasectomy performed instead of a regular neuter because the Veterinary Behaviorist’s recommendation for managing my hormone and stress levels.

I am still a happy and healthy boy that will make a great companion to a loving family in a multi-dog home! Even though it had been years since I saw my foster mom, when the volunteer brought me to her I recognized her right away and gave her kisses and shook my butt. Once I got back to Shiba HQ I got to meet all my old friends. They recognized me right away and in minutes I met all the other fosters and everyone loved me! You see, I am really special. Even though I am fearful of the world, I am not fearful of other dogs. Matter of fact, I am super savvy with reading canine body language and signaling to other dogs that I am not a threat. I settled in my old foster home right away and since I stayed on a yummy raw diet, I had no issues eating my food with all my foster friends. I licked my bowl clean every day!

My foster family says I settled in without any issues. I really enjoy meeting all the new dogs that come through Shiba HQ! I did get to go to a big event called “Shopping with Shibas” with dozens of other DC SIR alumni in a mall but I was still very nervous in public settings. DC SIR would like some time to evaluate me and help determine the very best home that will promise to be my forever home. So if you think you could be a good fit, watch my album and tell DC SIR you would like to adopt me when they say I am available!

FOSTER UPDATE: He is a sensitive Shiba who can be very fearful of new environments and people. Once bonded to his human, Buddy will follow you around and give you the most enthusiastic greetings. While Buddy is doing great with people, he finds a lot of comfort in other dogs and will be required to go to a home with another dog that is willing to be his friend. Buddy has been in a multi-dog home and absolutely thrives! He is regularly used as a neutral dog to meet and greet new rescues that come through Shiba HQ. Buddy is still playful and will initiate play with dogs both young and old. He has a way of winning over the crankiest of dogs! Buddy has exceptional ability to read canine body language and will adjust his interactions to that of the dog he is interacting with.

Buddy does great on walks in places he is familiar with. He also loves hikes on wooded trails. Buddy can be more fearful and skittish in busy areas with a lot of cars and city sounds. With proper behavior modification and confidence building, Buddy can do well in these areas but it is not recommended he live in a very busy city area. Healthwise, we opted to give Buddy a vasectomy instead of a traditional neuter based on the recommendation of his veterinarian behaviorist (when he was previously in our care). We also require that Buddy remain on a raw diet as there is support for the gut-brain axis and we have been highly successful in his behavior modification considering diet.

We will likely have a fearful dog online training requirement. See Jeni Grant’s online Fearful Dog class or provide us with a comparable class.

Buddy enjoys sleeping in bed with his foster mom. He does not like to be separated from his people and may whine to come to the part of the house with the people unless he has other dogs to play with. He is not destructive nor has he had any accidents. He seems a bit fearful of young children but this is something that can be worked on after building a bond with a family.
