Hello everyone, my name is now Mirai and it means the linking of “future” in Japanese. I am a 2.5-year-old, female Shiba Inu. I’m tall and weigh 27 lbs! My family loved me and took good care of me but had to surrender me to DC SIR for financial reasons. They took the time to research rescues and drive me several states away to get me into DC SIR’s foster program. I am described as a friendly Shiba that is shy but good with people and dogs. When I met the volunteer who would transport me to Shiba HQ I sniffed her and took some yummy treats. I rode well in the car but if I wasn’t tied down I may have ended up in the driver seat because I was so curious about where I was going. When I arrived at Shiba HQ I got to explore the yard on my own. Soon I met the neutral dog, Katniss, and we got along great so I got to slowly meet all the other dogs at Shiba HQ. I snapped a bit when the rude puppies got in my face but otherwise, I did great with everyone. Soon enough, the puppies pestered me to play so I showed them how fast I could run with my zoomies. Then the volunteer took me upstairs for a bath. I didn’t want to go in the shower but she carried me in with some more of those yummy treats.

I actually did really well in the shower and my fur was rinsing a brown color so good thing I got cleaned up! I also got my long nails trimmed. I didn’t like this so much. It took the volunteer a while to make me comfortable with trimming all my nails. After the bath, I got really excited and did the zoomies all over the yard. DC SIR always take a couple weeks to assess each dog. They told me I’m a good girl! Because I am healthy and friendly I should be able to find a home fairly quickly. Make sure to come out and meet me at DC SIR events so you can get to know all about me! DC SIR volunteers drive hours every month to bring the fosters together to meet the public and I would love to meet you. I know DC SIR volunteers put in a lot of work to ensure each and every rescue gets the best possible forever home and I will forever be part of a loving community that wants the best for me!

FOSTER UPDATE: Mirai has thrived I foster care and gets along with a variety of dogs in a multi-dog foster home. Mirai is slow to warm up to strangers but once she likes you she will paw for pets, bring you toys to pay fetch with, and cuddle on the couch. Guests: Mirai can be selective in how she greets guests that visit. At times, she will up and kiss visitors but other times she will hide behind her foster mom and bark at strangers. Being patient and creating a positive association with guests and managing/restricting interactions with guests unless everyone is on board with training is desirable for her guest interactions.Dogs: Mirai does great in a multidog home and plays well with different personalities. She prefers friendly male dogs. Mirai can guard her food from other dogs (not humans) so she is separated during feeding but this has gotten better as she know all the dogs.Counter surfing: Mirai is a tall Shiba and one of her bad behaviors is counter surfing for food. Her foster mom is working in this behavior but we would recommend you don’t leave a steak in paw’s reach! Barking: Mirai doesn’t bark much but when she does she has a large bellowing bark! She barks at the doorbell and loud sounds at night. The latter has diminished as she has gotten used to the sounds in her foster home and is redirected for being quiet.

Mirai is a sweet and loving Shiba but will require BONDING prior to being able to handle her. She will quickly trust and allow body handling and come to her person for comfort. Mirai has not had any accidents nor has she been destructive in her foster home.
