Riki is a 2.5 year-old-male Shiba Inu who was surrendered to the rescue when his parents were getting divorced. Riki is a high energy Shiba Inu who is always ready for adventure! He loves long nature hikes and he loves to swim! When a stream is near, Riki will be the first to run in and cool off! Riki can be a vocal Shiba and will bark/howl especially when he is left alone. Riki does not like to be separated from his family and displays mild separation anxiety in the form of howling/barking (not destructions). This should be a consideration when applying to adopt.
While Riki has some basic manners, we feel he will greatly benefit from reward-based training and will excel in formal training. Riki was in a foster home with a small baby but did not do well with the need for separation. Riki is now at Shiba HQ and loves being in a multi-dog home with no issues leaving him alone with the other dogs. Riki enjoys playing with other dogs and has an excellent play style with a variety of dogs. Riki can be mouthy when playing, but not aggressively. He will need to learn mouthing manners which we are now working on. Riki can be food motivated with the right treats but he is especially play motivated!
We recently had thunderstorms and Riki self-selected to put himself into a crate. He was back to normal after the storm passed but having a safe-space for scary moments would be advised. Riki would do best in a multi-dog home or house where a family member can be at home while working on his separation anxiety. Riki has no medical issues but he came to us with dry fur so we are working on a nutrient-dense and diverse raw diet to help get him back in optimal health!
