Hello everyone, my name is Rikka and it means “first day of summer” in Japanese. I am a 2-year-old female Shiba Inu. I’m small at just 15 lbs, and I was in a VA shelter since the beginning of the month. It was stressful and I didn’t always eat my food, but I was always super happy to see people and I would give everyone in the shelter kisses when I saw them.

When the DC SIR volunteer came to pick me up, I just knew my life was going to change. I took the yummy boiled chicken from the volunteer and after I ate my fill, I snuggled her and fell asleep in her arms. It was a long drive to Shiba HQ but I rode well and cuddled with my rescuers. Once I arrived at Shiba HQ I got to explore the yard on my own. Soon they let out the neutral test dog Katniss, and I got along great with her. When the other dogs came out I snapped in their faces! They were all so much bigger than me, so I let them know they can’t push me around. After the introductions, a volunteer took me to get cleaned up for my new foster family. I was very dirty, smelled, and I had spear grass stuck in my fur everywhere! It took a long time but she got all those dangerous grasses out of my fur. I also got my nails trimmed and didn’t even protest. I tried to curl up in the volunteer’s lap during the shower. Once I was clean I got to go back with the other dogs and I did much better with everyone. I even played with an allergy dog, Kenshin. All the boys love me because I’m not fixed yet so they just followed me around everywhere! I also met the resident cat and did great with him. I was also great with cats at the shelter.

I’m going to a foster home with one other dog and will be spayed soon. I will still require a 2-week behavior assessment but once that is through and I am spayed, I will be available for adoption. DC SIR thinks I am going to be a very popular girl! Be sure to follow my album to learn more about me as I settle in my new foster home!
