Hello everyone, my new name is now Sora and it means “Sky” in Japanese. I am a 1.5-year-old male Shiba Inu and I was in a MD shelter before DC SIR found me. I’m a happy-go-lucky guy with a great smile. DC SIR had me neutered yesterday. Today I went on a transport and my foster mom picked me up. Boy, was I happy to see her and go on a car ride. But since I didn’t know where I was going I cried a bit. When I go to my foster home, I got to explore the yard and this made me happy! I pranced and sniffed all over. When I saw the gate, it reminded me of my old family and I cried trying to find my people.

My foster mom was very nice and took me inside to explore and sat with me while I adjusted to my new place. Soon I got to meet two other Shiba Inu’s! One is in foster care like me, her name is Nikko and she and I had a blast running around the yard. The other Shiba is a DC SIR alum, and she let me know that she is the boss at my foster home and that’s ok with me! My foster mom says I have a lot of energy – even though I was just neutered yesterday. When she brought out a tennis ball I perked up and things got awesome when she threw the tennis ball because I got to chase it and bring it back! Yep, I know, not many Shiba’s fetch but I’m real good at it! I’m also happy to be out of the shelter but I’m still a bit sad and confused. I’ve been crying a bit but my foster mom has been real great at comforting me. She also gave me some dehydrated chicken hearts and oh my gawd those are soooo good!

I’ve only been with DC SIR a few hours so there is still a lot to learn about me. They said my winning smile and sweet personality should get me a pawsome forever home super fast! Please watch my album to learn more about me. Once DC SIR feels they have a good assessment of my temperament, I will be available for adoption! Please share my album to help me find a loving forever home!

Update: Sora is a 1.5 yr old male Shiba Inu. He was found as a stray and we recently had him neutered and made UTD on vaccinations, tested HW negative and chipped.

Sora is a healthy boy with a lot of energy. He is large at 37lbs and still has a lot of puppy behaviors that will need to be addressed with reward-based training. He came to us with dry, flaky, and itchy skin and brittle fur which is already improving since being on a nutrient-dense raw diet. Otherwise, he appears to be a healthy young Shiba Inu!

Sora’s high energy can be off-putting to less energetic Shibas like the pups at his current foster home. He obviously needs to learn some canine manners. This is also the case with household manners. Sora will get into things and be destructive, so managing his environment, providing enticing toys that can be stimulating when you are out of the house and most of all, finding a family with a high energy-level to match his. Sora is not a dog that would do well locked-up in the house with 15-minute walks twice a day. He will do best with a family that can run him or go on extended hikes.

Sora can guard high-value treats or puzzle games with treats from humans and other dogs. This has not involved biting but it does involve a warning growl. Again, working with a reward based training to create new positive associations with people and resources is paramount to Sora’s adoption requirements.

Sora obviously did not have any basic training when he came to us so we will require a force-free training contract to begin within the first 2-weeks of adoption.
