Hello everyone, my name is now Tamashi and it means “soul” in Japanese. I am a 9-month-old, male Shiba Inu. I’m small at just 20 lbs! I was purchased from a pet store last December. But my owner didn’t do research on the breed and found I was too much to handle. I have had basic training classes but I have not had much socialization with other dogs so I have a lot to learn. DC SIR says I need to be neutered so they will schedule my appointment for next week. I am a confident and inquisitive puppy. When I got in the car with the DC SIR volunteer I happily took yummy treats. When we arrived at Shiba HQ, I got to explore the yard on my own. I met the neutral test dog, Katniss. We got along great so I go to meet the other Shibas at Shiba HQ. I growled a bit at the male Shibas but generally got along with everyone. I also need to learn some social canine manners though.

I tend to get in the other dogs’ faces and try to make them play with me even though they don’t want to and are giving me clear signs that they don’t want to play. I am very high energy and will require an active family that can keep me engaged and take me on fun adventures. Since arriving at Shiba HQ I do a lot of marking so they have me in a belly band indoors while they teach me about not peeing inside. It should also help that I am getting neutered soon. I am very receptive to treats and want to please. I’ve already started following my foster mom around for attention. Overall, I am a happy and healthy young Shiba Inu that would do best in a home with a friendly female dog that loves to play. I will also require a force-free training contract. If you think you may be a good fit, please send in your application to adopt me and DC SIR will let you know more about me. I will be ready for adoption after my two-week assessment but I look forward to meeting you soon!

UPDATE: He has thrived in foster care in a multi-dog foster home. Tamashi is a very hyper puppy who needs work with impulse control. He loves to play with other dogs and is just now learning doggie-manners. Sometimes Tamashi can linger in other dog’s face too much, or he wants to play when other dogs want to nap. Tamashi has met over a dozen new dogs at his foster home with little issue. He prefers females but will also play with friendly males. (Tamashi doesn’t like unneutered males). However, we recently took Tamashi to a DC SIR YAppy Hour event, and he exhibited leash reactivity; snapping, lunging, and growling at other dogs on leash. In a couple of hours of controlled greets with a positive association, Tamashi was able to meet new dogs on leash calmly.

All our rescues under one year of age require a reward-based training contract. Working on leash-reactivity with other dogs would be a focus to ensure he continues with great canine social skills. Tamashi can be mouthy with people in a friendly way, but he is easily redirected with praise for playing with appropriate toys. Tamashi had marking accidents his first few days in foster but has not had issues since he was neutered. We think Tamashi would do best in a multi-dog home. Preferably with a playful dog or with a very active family that plans to engage Tamashi with enriching games and adventures. Tamashi is crate trained and loves to cuddle with people once he is bonded to them.
