We see a lot of discussion on whether the Shiba Inu should be in a constricting collar or a well-fitted harness. DC Shiba Inu Rescue has placed all rescues in harnesses from day one. We have always provided science to our adopters on why we choose harnesses. Collars are great for identification tags and we advocate all dogs wear them. However, we do not walk our dogs on collars. Please watch this video with an open mind and consider buying a harness for your Shiba Inu or working with a force-free trainer to help condition your dog to love his/her harness.
We have successfully transitioned hundreds of rescue dogs to harnesses. There is no one-type-fits-all harness. We use certain types of harnesses for body sensitive dogs, fearful dogs, escape artists, reactive dogs, etc. Ill-fitted harness may cause growth plate issues, furr loss, discomfort and/or other issues, so it is important to do some research and consult a professional. For those of you who are actively looking for a trainer, we highly suggest you use The Pet Professional Guild to begin your search.
