Does your yard look like it got hit by moon rocks? Before you blow your top and run around your yard screaming at your dog, begonias, and everything under the sun, understand why dogs dig. Figuring out why your dog digs can help you find the right solution; by redirecting to appropriate behaviors, managing outdoor time or designating digging areas. Dogs dig for a variety of reasons and here are the most common:
• Prey
• Entertainment
• Comfort or protection
• Escape
• Attention

Running after your dog yelling “No No! No!” won’t teach your dog what you want him to do (see our page: Trouble with ‘No’). They will likely find another undesirable digging spot or dig when you aren’t there to catch them. Designating a digging area or providing a place to cool off are just a couple solutions.
