Resource Guarding

There are many myths surrounding a dog’s natural instinct to resource guard. Probably the most pervasive and damaging myth is that the guarding is a symptom of “dominance.” This simplistic view tends to result in owner’s belief that everything their dog does that the owner disapproves, is a nefarious and aggressive bid for power of the household. These owners then place misguided effort into proving they are a bigger boss than their dog. Animal guardians would be much better off spending their time looking for opportunities to teach the dog not to guard and to reward the proper behaviors.

For those of you who are actively looking for a trainer to help with resource guarding, we highly suggest you use The Pet Professional Guild to begin your search.
