Asahi

Adoption status: Adopted!
Asahi is a 4 yr old male black and tan Shiba Inu.

Hello everyone, my new name is now Asahi and it means, “morning sun” in Japanese. I am a 4-year-old, black and tan, male Shiba Inu and I weigh about 16lbs. I was born to a back yard breeder and when I didn’t get along with my Shiba father I was placed in another home with children. Unfortunately, that home didn’t work out and I wasn’t responding to their training methods. Thankfully, after a month on the DC SIR wait list I was able to get into a foster home! Now I have a real forever family!

DC SIR will take a minimum of 2 weeks to assess my behavior and health before listing the requirements for my adoptive home. But let me tell you what they know about me so far. I did great on their neutral dog assessment and body handling. I didn’t mind the stranger touching me and I was fine walking with the neutral dog, Katniss, and then playing with her in an off-leash park. A month later, I got picked up by a DC SIR volunteer to go over to Shiba HQ for intake. I was brought through their back gate and got to explore the yard by myself. The volunteer soon let friendly dogs outside one by one. I was fine meeting everyone. I wasn’t really interested in the other dogs though, I just kept jumping at the gate and crying. I was trying to get back to the family that gave me up. The volunteer tried to give me treats that I enjoyed at the assessment, but I didn’t care about those anymore. I just wanted to leave. I guess the other dogs saw how stressed I was and they all kept their distance. The volunteer quietly waited for me to come to her. When I did she comforted me in a soothing voice. So I started to follow her around. Eventually, I followed her inside and jumped up on her to pick me up. She let me sit with her on a chair. I pushed against her for security but I was panting because I was so nervous.

DC SIR says I am fully vetted and up to date on medical but that they need to evaluate my potential behavior problems. They think that I will respond great to the right kind of training. I think so too. Please share my story to help me find a forever home.
