Hello, everyone, my name is now Obi, which is a traditional Japanese sash. I am a 9.5-year-old male Shiba Inu, and before you keep reading, be prepared because my story is pretty sad. Until recently I was living on the street with my owner, who loved me very much. Things were going ok, but then Animal Control saw me running loose. When they found me, they noticed I didn’t want to leave an older man hanging around the area. An officer asked the man if I had an owner and he said no, but after she took me he got upset and told her that he was my owner and that he was homeless and couldn’t take care of me anymore. He was hoping to walk to Ohio with me but realized I couldn’t make the trip. He begged Animal Control to help me find a home that could take care of a sweet dog like me and the officer knew that the best people to help an older Shiba Inu would be a breed specific rescue like DC SIR. A volunteer reached out and DC SIR worked quickly to get me out of the shelter and into a foster home. A couple of nice volunteers who have Shibas drove 8 hrs round-trip to get me to Shiba HQ.

Once I arrived at Shiba HQ I got to explore the yard on my own. I was nervous and my tail was down. Soon I got to meet all the dogs and I got along great with every dog I met. I then got a shower and the water ran dirty for a couple rinses. I followed the volunteer back to the main floor and my tail went up when I saw the other dogs. After more outdoor exploring, I came back inside and even jumped up on the couch. Eventually I settled down on a soft dog bed. My foster parents are coming to pick me up today. They recently lost one of their Shibas but have a DC SIR alum, Chika (previously Jeshika). They will be able to tell you more about me but first impressions are that I am a healthy and mobile 9-year-old with a lot of love to give. I will need a full medical and dental care too. DC SIR hopes to raise the funds for my medical soon. Please share and follow my journey with DC SIR and let them know if you would like to give me a forever home!

UPDATE: Obi’s foster parents said that he seemed to bond quicker to males but is doing great with both of his foster parents. Obi isn’t a big cuddler and isn’t fond of hugs and kisses but he will show you how much he appreciates you by a typical Shiba greeting with a shaky butt, squinty eyes, howlie howl, and a toy in his mouth. We recently had full dental work done on Obi to include 4 teeth extractions and cleaning. Obi is neutered, chipped, 4dx negative and up to date on vaccinations. As with most seniors, he has some fatty masses but they are not in the way of his mobility.
