Hello everyone, my name is Nariko and it means “thunder child” in Japanese. I am a 3.5-year-old, female Shiba Inu. I’m small at just 20 lbs! My story is one that really upsets DC SIR. You see, my owners brought me over from Japan and contacted DC SIR because I have never been potty trained, and I’ve been pottying in the house more since the move. DC SIR offered training and resources, and offered to take me into Rescue. Instead of working with DC SIR, my owners dumped me in a shelter after I had another accident. Instead of having a safe and positive transition into a foster home, I was left in a cage alone and terrified. I was so shut down and scared that the shelter immediately contacted DC SIR.
The DC SIR Intake Team were shocked and upset that I was dumped in a shelter. DC SIR volunteers quickly dropped their plans and even brought family that flew into town on a 4 hour drive to get me to Shiba HQ. They saw how terrified I was in the shelter and how my whole body shook in fear. I couldn’t wait to get into the car and soon curled up in a family member’s lap for comfort. Once I arrived at Shiba HQ my tail was up and I happily sniffed the yard. Soon I met friendly dogs and that made me even happier! The rescues and alumni were so nice that we all played together and I did many zoomies!
I am upset my family discarded me like they did, and did not understand that I did not potty in the house out of spite but rather out of lack of knowledge in how to potty train me. DC SIR noticed that I may have a UTI and will work on my potty training with reward-based training. I was very lucky that the shelter I was dumped in knows about DC SIR and they moved quickly to get me into an environment where I would thrive. If you know anyone who wants to get rid of their Shiba Inu, please educate them on the difference between a Rescue and Shelter and encourage them to take the time to safely place their dog in the best environment. Follow my story and progress as I finally get the humane training that I deserve to be a happy family member!
