Hi everyone, my name is now Gaia, and it means ancestral mother. My foster mom picked this name because she sees me as the matriarch of the 12 puppy mill dogs pulled by DC SIR. I happened to be the last dog let out of the 12 crates at 2 am when we arrived at Shiba HQ. I was so happy to be out, but I went and checked on all the other dogs and made sure they were okay. DC SIR noticed I had severely swollen ear canals. I am deaf, but they got me to a vet right away, and I may regain some hearing after treatment for my neglected ears. The vet noted I also have mild allergies and yeasty paws, but DC SIR knows how to get rid of this issue with good nutrition and a healthy environment. I also had bloodwork done which was good, except that it shows I have mild anemia, which DC SIR will also treat through nutrition. The vet noted I have good teeth but may need some cracked teeth pulled, and I will get a cleaning when I am under anesthesia. But let me tell you a bit about me. I am about ten years old. I previously lived in a home with a family, so I know more about house living than some of the other mill rescues. DC SIR doesn’t know how long I lived in a wire cage with no comforts, but they do know I am so grateful to be free. I trust my foster mom and know she loves me. I roll over for belly rubs and am the first dog she saw play with a toy. I’ve slept with my toy tucked under my cheek every night since I got it. I also let my foster mom put me on a soft bed at night. Despite soft dog beds everywhere, I tend to sleep on the floor like the other mill dogs! At the vet, I greeted cats, dogs, and people. I was even happy to be handled by the staff, who all loved my sweet demeanor. I may be older, but I am full of love. I am a gentle Shiba that finds so much joy in any kindness shown to me. Considerations: While a puppy mill releases not extreme fear. We will be treating her ear infection, but she may remain deaf. We are also treating allergies with DC SIR Allergy program focused on a nutrient-dense raw diet and addressing underlying conditions. Addressing Anemia. Gaia will require dental, and we have not raised any funds for additional medical care, so please consider donating to have her dental done. We have to clear her anemia prior to surgery.
