Hi everyone, my name is now Latke, which is a type of potato pancake, because my foster mom says I am a little potato! I am a tiny red female Shiba Inu. I was rescued with 31 other Shibas from a large puppy mill release. I am one of the 12 Shiba Inus that went to DC SIR. I arrived at 2 am at Shiba HQ after a day’s drive. The nice volunteers let us out of our crates one by one. In the morning, we all got baths to clean away the years of filth. I got to eat lots of yummy boiled chicken and I wagged my tail at all the volunteers. Soon my foster mom arrived to pick me up, along with another mill rescue, Houdini, and we went on another car ride. She put me in a dog bed in her car, where I stayed put for the entire drive. I kept staring at my foster mom as she drove us to our new foster home, thankful to be free from my tiny cage in a loud puppy mill. When we arrived at our foster home, I ran around in the backyard with Houdini. Soon, I got to meet the two resident dogs, and I ran up to greet them. When we went inside the house, I plopped down on the floor. I haven’t yet figured out that dog beds are more comfortable than the floor. If you saw the cage I used to live in, you would understand why I am grateful to nap on the floor! I am pretty confident for a mill dog, but I am still apprehensive and do not like to be approached from behind. I have learned that not all humans are scary, and I will wag my tail and approach them to see if they have boiled chicken for me, and I’m starting to like other treats as well (Ziwi peak in lamb but not in venison). I love my yummy raw food, and I scarf it down. When I am finished, I wait by the other dogs to see if they left any food in their bowls for me. I am learning to enjoy pets and like the gentle massages my foster mom gives.
