Hello everyone! My name is Dahlia because my foster mom thinks I look like a big floofy Dahlia flower. I was rescued with 12 other Shiba Inu’s by DC SIR from a commercial puppy mill. It was a long drive across the country before I got my paws on grass in the middle of the night at Shiba HQ. I wasn’t sure how to walk. I’d been in a steel cage for so long that everything felt weird. I was put in an xpen to nap for a couple hours with my fellow mill release. Then in the morning, the volunteer washed years of filth off of us. I am a young long haired Shiba Inu. I look like a stuffed animal, and I bet you wanna squeeze me, but I don’t like to be touched by strangers. I had bad experiences with mill people handling me, so I twist and snap. When my foster mom tried to pick me up, she took a long time to ensure I felt safe and spoke to me about what was happening. I felt safer when she takes time to get to know me. I didn’t know how to use the stairs, so when I first got to Shiba HQ, my foster mom had to carry me up and down the stairs. I didn’t like to be touched. Soon she was giving me treats and singing to me. She also put me down so softly and gently that I started to approach her when I wanted to be picked up to go inside. She tells me, “up, up!” before picking me up so I know what will happen. I am a stalky girl, and I overheat on warm sunny days, so I won’t be too active when it is hot outside. I am not used to sleeping on a soft bed, so I always move it away and sleep on the floor, but I have started using the beds as pillows. My foster mom keeps putting me on the bed and giving me massages. She feels bad for me having such a horrible life. I am the last of her mill fosters to learn the stairs. I know how to go down, but I can’t figure out how to go up! I still need full vetting before I am available for adoption!
