Hello everyone, my name is now Kaiju, and it means ‘Monster’ in Japanese. I am a cream female Shiba Inu, born on October 4, 2020. I was adopted by a family who loved me very much but found my issues too much to handle. You see, I am very fearful of people, and I didn’t have much socialization during my critical developmental period. So I have fear aggression issues. So much so that no one had been able to get a collar, harness, or even a slip lead on me. I was taken to the vet in a crate, and the vet tried for an hour to update my vaccines and give me a check-up, but I was so scared that I snarled and snapped and lashed out the entire time. The vet ended up telling my owners to put me to sleep. Luckily, my owners wanted the best for me and called DC SIR instead. They knew that DCSIR has a reward-based behavior modification program that will help me build confidence and trust in humans. When the DC SIR volunteers came to pick me up, I cowered in my xpen. I shook all over when I saw them. Even after the volunteer tried to give me yummy boiled chicken, I just kept shaking. I have been living, eating, and pottying in my xpen because no one can handle me. DC SIR volunteers didn’t want to stress me out too much so they had my owner scoot me into a soft crate for transport to Shiba HQ. I pottied in the crate and shook nervously. When I got to Shiba HQ, they washed my bed and blankets and put me into an xpen, and waited for me to calm down before trying to bring me treats or food. I was a bit interested in the other dogs at Shiba HQ that came to sniff me. DC SIR has worked with extreme fearful dogs before and knows that I will make progress with the proper behavior modification, trust, and choice in training. AVAILABLE UPDATE: Kaiju was born October 4, 2020. She was surrendered to Rescue for extreme fear and inability to be handled. When her previous owners took her to the vet office and they were unable to handle her, they suggested she be put down. Thankfully, the owners contacted DC SIR instead. Kaiju has made some progress in Rescue; she loves her raw diet, is on targeted supplements that help her anxiety, and responds to reward-based behavior modification. However, Kaiju is still a special needs puppy that will require an adopter with fearful dog experience. She will also require a home with a fenced yard as she is still highly aversive to handling or attempts to harness or collar. Kaiju will need to be in a stable home with no children and little outside traffic while she bonds with her adopters. We require that Kaiju goes to a home with other friendly dogs. Kaiju has made the most progress while in the presence of other friendly dogs.
People: Kaiju takes time to warm up to people and will likely growl and bark at strangers. We are creating a positive association through treats at a distance and providing her with the ability to retreat. She allows her foster family to pet her at times but picking up is still difficult, and she will not allow any harness, collars, or leashes near her. Kaiju is happiest and most confident when she is around other friendly dogs. Kaiju may snap at people who attempt to touch/pet her when she is not comfortable with them. Kaiju will require an adopter with previous fearful dog experience or willingness to enroll in approved reward-based fearful dog classes due to her extreme fear.
Dogs: We require that Kaiju go to a home with other friendly dogs. She is very observant and is more outgoing after watching other dogs interact with humans. She is also more playful and happy when other dogs are around during her playtime and behavior modification.
