Suzu is a 7-year-old female black and tan Shiba Inu. Follow her Facebook album.

Hello everyone, my name is now Suzu, and it means ‘bell’ in Japanese. I am a black and tan, 7-year-old female, Shiba Inu. I have only ever lived with one family, two adults, and two cats. I got along great with everyone, but I am an anxious dog and take time to adjust to new people. Unfortunately, my mom didn’t feel I was a good fit for the family, so my dad took the time to research new homes and found DC SIR. He felt assured that they would comfort me in my transition to finding a forever home and take the time to find the right home for me, and I am so thankful for that. Let me tell you a bit about myself; I get along great with cats and my family, and I am nervous around new people and strange dogs. I can be sweet, fun, and playful with my family, and I love long hikes or cuddling on the couch with my people on a lazy day.

When the DCSIR volunteer came to pick me up, I was busy sniffing the world around me. My dad was crying, but I didn’t know why. Soon the nice volunteer took me in her car, and I realized I was no longer with familiar faces. I got nervous and started to pant and pace. After a bit, my foster mom picked me up to take me to my foster home, where I will live with a nice mom and dad and three other Shibas (two are DC SIR alumni). I was confused and paced a lot but was distracted sniffing the yard. I met the other Shibas one by one, and I didn’t mind them as long as they didn’t linger in my face. The last Shiba to meet me was in my face a lot, so I growled at her to stay away. I think I prefer cats, but DC SIR will let you know how I do with dogs over the next weeks. My foster parents have no issues carrying me or with any type of body handling, but I’m content to stay in my corner with my bed and toys from my old home. Follow my story to see if you can be my forever home. I will be available for adoption after I complete my two-week health and temperament assessment.

UPDATE: Suzu is a 7-year-old-female Shiba Inu. She lived with one family, but they decided to live in a dog-free home. Suzu has thrived in her foster home after a bit of a rocky start. She lives with her foster mom and dad and 3 Shiba Inu Shiblings. Suzu takes time to trust strangers and may growl at people until she is comfortable with them. Once she trusts you, she can be handled without issue. Because Suzu is selective in the dogs she chooses to get along with, we require a meet and greet with other pets. Suzu does not like ‘in-your-face dogs and prefers well-mannered, aloof dogs like herself! While Suzu did not have cats around in foster care, we are told she lived with cats previously without issue. Suzu is a loving Shiba Inu who will thrive in a low-key home where she will not be bombarded with strangers. Once she is bonded to her humans she will be yours for life!
