Hello everyone, my name is Taiga, and it means “large river’ in Japanese. You may remember me from last year. I was a 14-week-old male cream Shiba Inu that was purchased from a puppy mill in PA. But the people who bought me didn’t want me anymore, and I was returned to the mill. They contacted a liaison to DC SIR, and a volunteer drove 4 hours to pick me up right away! She was surprised at what a big boy I was at just three months old! I did really well at Shiba HQ with multiple dogs and a cat. I was adopted into a home with one other dog and a cat. Initially, things went well, and my owners started to see concerning behavior with other resident pets and hired a trainer. Unfortunately, I had a few scuffles with the resident dog and could no longer Play together. Since I had no other dogs to play with, I pestered the cat so much that his life became uncomfortable. So the trainer suggested that I be an only pet home. I still do really well on play dates and at doggie day care, but DC SIR will require that I be an only pet. I love people and enjoy greeting anyone who will give me attention! I have developed some handling issues. I don’t like having my harness taken on and off. My pawrents say that I also have some resource guarding when I steal things like paper napkins and larger high-value treats that take a while to consume. I do respond very well to high-value trade-ups, so commitment to behavior modification for these is a priority with my new adopters! My pawrents did a lot of training, and I know things like stay, sit, leave it, come, drop it, off, jump, up, down, and I can even ring a wall-mounted bell to let them know when I have to potty. I am a young, healthy Shiba that would do best in a home with no kids or other pets. I am a sweet boy with a rough beginning, but I love people and will be an amazing companion in the right home.
