Hello everyone, my name is now Neko, and it means, ‘cat’ in Japanese. I am a tiny 5-year-old, male, Shiba Inu. I was surrendered to a Maryland shelter with my best friend, a 1-year-old male cat named Kitty. Things got scary fast. We were separated at the shelter and I didn’t understand where my people went. They had to move without us but I don’t understand why we were here. Luckily, the nice people at the shelter contacted DC SIR right away. The shelter staff told DC SIR about my buddy, Kitty, too. DC SIR is a breed specific rescue and doesn’ take in cats but made an exception to keep us together. I was so happy when DC SIR volunteers came to take us to foster care. But I didn’t trust the people yet and nipped at them when they tried to pick me up and put me in a crate. I was just so scared and didn’t know where my friend was either.

When I got to Shiba HQ I was let out alone to explore the yard. I was scared of the volunteer and didn’t go near her. Soon I met the neutral dog, Katniss, and I felt more confident with her around. I got to meet all the dogs at Shiba HQ and I got along great with everyone. It took a couple hours for me to come into the house and even longer before I would let a volunteer pet me. Once the volunteer comforted me on my terms we became best friends. I followed her everywhere and pawed at her for pets. That is when she was able to pick me up and I got a huge surprise. She took me to a room where I got to see my best friend, Kitty! We were both overjoyed to see each other and we pranced and played. It was the first time the volunteers saw me truly happy! I’ll see Kitty daily but he will be on the 3rd floor with the other cat and friendly dogs. My foster mom says I smell very bad and I’m getting a bath after she builds my trust more. I slept on her chest and nuzzled her for pets all night. It’s nice to feel safe and have people give me space and time to bond. I am scheduled for neuter and vetting soon.

Please share my story so Kitty and I can find a forever home together!
