Raw Feeding

DC SIR: Three Types of Raw Feeding DC SIR acknowledges and uses three types of raw feeding approaches for our rescues.  WPMR/BARF is used for our severe allergy and special needs dogs by experienced raw feeders to ensure nutrient-dense complete and balanced meals over time. This is typically in conjunction with other therapeutic feeding and usually involves preliminary medical tests for specific diseases and deficiencies. We require fosters to feed 2nd option (prepackaged frozen raw) and use 3rd option as…

October Foster Update: Daiki

Overall he is doing really well. He is showing us more and more glimpses of his Shibatude. He is very curious, and loves to know what’s going on. His coat is also coming in nicely. His energy level is getting much better. We walked for 45 minutes last night and afterwards he still had enough energy to try and chase after 2 squirrels. Overall he does well on a leash, he doesn’t pull too much and with a little bit of…

Foster Update: Daiki

Daiki continues to settle in quite well. He had some issues finding a sleeping spot last night, but finally found a corner he liked after a couple of hours. He seems to prefer sleeping on the floor over sleeping on a blanket. I was a little surprised that he hasn’t shown any interest whatsoever in the blanket or the crate that the previous owners brought along. Overall, he seems to prefer being outside over being inside the house. He would…

Kisa Medical Update: September 2014

It’s been 3 weeks and one day since Kisa’s vet visit with a new holistic vet. We noticed some mild improvement the first 2 weeks on her supplements as we waited for her allergy test results. We’ve had her allergy results for a week and boy, Kisa is allergic to a lot of foods. Her list of allergies is so long that we decided to list the foods she is not allergic to as it is a very short list: Salmon Sardines Tuna…

September Foster Update: Miya

Miya is still with her foster family, waiting to find her forever home. Read the first update from her  foster pawrents.  Miya is still doing very well with us. She is still losing weight and she is starting to look really good, thanks to the yummy food and the great weather so the dogs can have long walks and they can play and run around a lot more. She is very food oriented, and will eat anything you offer her. She also…

Foster Update: Anika

Anika has been in her foster for a few weeks now, so her foster mom sent us an update. Anika is a super-laid back, easy going Shiba. Although she was a little nervous when she first came to us, she is an absolute cuddlebug! She will literally sit with you for hours, and will nudge your hand if you forget to pet her. She doesn’t mind being brushed, but will get bored of it quickly. Her version of the “shiba 500” mostly consists…

Foster Update: Miya

Miya is currently in a foster home with two other dogs, Koda and Saga. Her foster pawrents sent us an update. Miya LOVES playing! She is opening up a lot to us, and she is becoming very playful with us, especially with Koda. She LOVES our big goofy Koda! She would do well in a house with other dogs.     She is pretty smart too; it took her less than 20 seconds to figure out how to play with the…

Medical Update: Kisa

Kisa had her first visit with our new holistic vet, and it was a wonderful. It was a new experience for Kisa as well as for the rescue volunteers. The Facility From the outset, the appointment was different from everything we expect of a vet’s office. There were no cold tables. Instead, they bring out a rug for the dog to lay on and feel comfortable, while the staff gets to know the patient.  Kisa was very comfortable and won over…

Celebrating Seniors: Koji

Koji is a male senior who was rescued by DC SIR and adopted in 2013. Here is Koji’s adoption story, as told by his dad. My wife and I adopted Koji in May 2013. We already had a senior mixed-breed, Lady Goldenpaw, and thought she might like company in her golden years. Koji came in a bit shell-shocked from being abandoned, but every day he warms up more-and-more to our love. Lady Goldenpaw is pretty jealous of Koji, as she’s…
